Australia won the toss and chose to bat, a decision that paid dividends early as the vistors raced to 80 for 1 after 12 overs.
Tim Southee bowled the opener Aaron Finch for 14 in the third over, but the Black Caps pace man was punished for some wayward bowling, finishing with figures of 2 wickets for 65 runs from 9 overs.
Southee's innacuracy forced the early intorduction of Daniel Vettori, the veteran stifling the Australian batsmen with a tidy spell of 2 for 41 from 10.
But it was Trent Boult who became the Australians' tormenter with a fiery second spell that yielded five wickets.
Boult finished with figures of 5 for 27 from 10, his best performance in one day internationals.
Brad Haddin top scored for Australia with 43 before Corey Anderson had him caught at cover-point to end the Australian innings.
Daniel Vettori predicted it would be a difficult run chase for New Zealand, but his captain Brendon McCullum had a different opinion.
The big hitting opener blasted 26 from 10 balls before his partner Martin Guptill fell for 11 in the 4th over.
McCullum seemed untroubled after he was struck on the arm by a Mitchell Johnson delivery, slogging 7 fours and 3 sixes before he was eventually caught at mid-off for 50.
The out of form Ross Taylor scored one run before he was clean bowled by Mitchell Starc, heralding the tea break.
Kane Williamson (9) and Grant Elliot (0) will resume the New Zealand innings at 79 for 3.
