History-making ride for NZ showjumper

6:52 am on 7 June 2010

New Zealand's Guy Thomas has created history as the first rider ever to win all three grand prix on one horse, taking the Triple Crown of showjumping on Peterbilt in northern California.

Thomas and Peterbilt headed home a 25-strong class, with fellow New Zealanders Peter Breakwell, Rachel Fields and Duncan McFarlane also placing in the top 10.

Breakwell was second on Lucas, Fields sixth on Karl du Chateau and McFarlane seventh on Mr Whoppy.

Thomas rounded out the top 12 at the Capital City Classic in Sacramento, placing ninth on Vivaldi and 11th on Carino.

The 32-year-old is hopeful his efforts have caught the eye of New Zealand selectors, who are in the throes of naming a team to compete at the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky in September.
