McLaren's Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time in the opening practice session ahead of Sunday's Formula One Japanese Grand Prix.
The championship leader's time was 0.15 seconds quicker than his title rival Felipe Massa of Ferrari.
McLaren's Heikki Kovalainen and Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen were third and fourth quickest respectively, with Renault's Fernando Alonso - winner of the previous race in Singapore - and Nelson Piquet Jr. the best of the rest.
