There'll be no Formula One Grand Prix in France next year.

The French Motorsport Federation had said the economic situtation meant it couldn't continue finance the event at Magny-Cours unless a new promotor was found.

Becauyse that hasn't happened the country that invented grand prix racing will be absent from the Formula One calendar for only the second time since the championship started in 1950.

Formula One's supremo Bernie Ecclestone had wanted drop Magny-Cours and move to a circuit closer to Paris but it was granted a reprieve with a June 28 date on an 18-round calendar published last week.

There was no Canadian Grand Prix on that calendar and it's not clear whether the French decision means a reprieve for Montreal.
