Adelaide Oval to host AFL games

6:05 am on 3 May 2011

A proposed 726 million dollar redevelopment of the Adelaide Oval will go ahead after South Australian cricket members voted to share the ground with the AFL.

AFL games will return to the historic inner city oval when it becomes a multi-purpose stadium from 2014.

At a special meeting last night 80 per cent of more than 12 thousand members voted to change their constitution to allow control of the ground to be split between cricket and AFL.

Under the state government proposal, the SACA's 115 million dollar debt is cleared and AFL clubs, Adelaide and Port Adelaide, will play games at the redeveloped oval.

The stadium will host about 50 thousand spectators, an increase from the current 37 thousand capacity.
