Serena Williams escapes serious punishment for outburst

Foul-mouthed Serena Williams has been fined a mere $US2,000 for verbally abusing the chair umpire during her loss to Sam Stosur in yesterday's final at the US Tennis Open.

Despite being still on probation for a similar offence at the 2009 U.S. Open, Williams, the winner of 13 major titles, escaped a more severe penalty after officials ruled her abuse of the umpire did not constitute a major offence.
