Two NZ boats into medal races

5:47 am on 11 December 2011

Two New Zealand sailing team boats have made the ISAF World Championship medal races on a very windy day off the shores of Fremantle in Western Australia.

The men's 470 duo of Paul Snow-Hansen and Jason Saunders and Sara Winther in the Laser Radial will contest the medal races, despite the 470 men finishing further back in the fleet than they have all week.

They ended with a 16th and 18th and will have one more chance to climb even higher up the leader board during the medal race on Sunday.

Winther started racing in 11th place overall but after completing both races in the front pack finished the gold fleet ninth overall, just enough to make it through to the Laser Radial medal race.

Only sailors that finish within the top ten of a regatta such as this qualify for the medal race.

The remainder of the NZL Sailing Team will be in action on Monday when the Men's RS:X, Laser, 49er and Women's 470 begin racing.

New Zealand also qualified all four fleet racing disciplines for the 2012 London Olympics.
