Samoa says $12 million in aid from New Zealand and Australia will be used to rebuild homes and infrastructure lost in last month's devastating tsunami.

An 8.0 magnitude quake on 29 September triggered the huge waves in the Pacific, killing at least 184 people in Samoa, American Samoa and Tonga.

The New Zealand and Australian governments have announced they will each give the Samoan government $6 million to aid recovery efforts.

Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi says the government is encouraging families to rebuild inland.

The money will be divided between helping families and restoring basic necessities, he says.

Meanwhile, the children of Samoa have been celebrated by their parents and communities at White Sunday celebrations on Sunday.

Young people dressed in white outfits recited verses, performed dramas and sung songs as part of the festivities.
