Sir Robert Jones pushes downtown vehicle ban plan

9:20 pm on 11 December 2009

Sir Robert Jones has told Wellington business leaders of his radical plan to ban all vehicles from the central city and create a golden-mile shopping mall, complete with old-fashioned trams and bikes for hire.

Sir Robert's ideas involve forming a political team aimed at winning the 2010 local body election to set his plans in motion.

He won't release details of the team or who his mayoral candidate is until a few months before the election.

But having a vehicle-free area has been successful, he says, in some of the world's greatest cities - such as Copenhagan, Amsterdam and Brisbane - and would work in Wellington too.
