Leading psychiatrist criticises mental health cuts

10:43 pm on 30 March 2010

One of New Zealand's foremost forensic psychiatrists says cuts to mental health funding will have a dramatic impact on front-line services.

Sandy Simpson has just stepped down as the director of the Mason Clinic after nine years.

The clinic was created in response to a Government inquiry into the care of mentally ill offenders.

Dr Simpson says the cuts to the mental health service's administration have meant frontline staff have had to pick up that work as well as their own.
