Disabled people still significantly disadvantaged - report

11:40 am on 13 April 2010

A report by CCS Disability Action and employment service Workbridge concludes disabled people are twice as likely as other New Zealanders to leave school without qualification.

It also says disabled people with qualifications are only as likely to get work as others who have no qualifications.

The authors, Viv Maidaborn and Grant Cleland, say a review of special education is needed so disabled people can get better qualified.

Ms Maidaborn told Nine to Noon that if changes are not made there's a risk more disabled people will end up on benefits.

She says this has a cost both to the Government and the individual.
