Four homes in Whakatane have been evacuated because of concerns over the stability of land above them.
The Whakatane District Council says it has made the order on advice from geotechnical engineers.
The properties are on Muriwai Drive and the evacuation on Wednesday is precautionary.
However, the council says it has serious concerns and a large potential landslip has been identified.
The area is being monitored by the council and the Earthquake Commission.
