A new children's hospital is to be built in Melbourne by 2017.

The Victoria state government said the hospital with 230 beds will be built at the Monash Medical Centre in Clayton. Work is expected to begin by 2014.

The hospital will have an emergency department, multiple surgical theatres and a specialised intensive care unit.

AAP reports the cost was put at around $A250 million before the last state election in 2010, but the government will not have a clear idea on costs until after the project is put to tender.

The Royal Children's Hospital was recently refurbished.
