An additional eight charges have been laid against a New Zealander accused of embezzling $A16 million from Queensland Health.

Hohepa Morehu-Barlow, also known as Joel Morehu-Barlow, 36, appeared in a Brisbane court on Monday via video link from prison.

The prosecutor told the court an initial charge of $A11 million will be replaced with another charge, taking the total to $A16 million.

The ABC reports the accused has been held in custody since his arrest in December last year.

His bank accounts have been frozen and his property seized.

He has yet to plead, and his lawyer Adam Magill asked for a two-week adjournment to consider the latest charges.

Queensland Health employees were asked on Friday to declare any gifts they received from the accused.
