Although Monteverdi was maestro di cappella at San Marco for 30 years until his death, L’Orfeo was actually written during his previous appointment at the court of Mantua.

This opera on the story of Orpheus in the underworld is the earliest work in the genre that is still regularly performed today.

NZ Barok plays the Toccata, Sinfonia and Ritornelli.
