Lalo Schifrin is one of the most eclectic musicians you could name. He was born in Buenos Aires and began learning piano alongside his friend Daniel Barenboim. He studied composition at the Paris Conservatoire with Olivier Messiaen. But he also played jazz with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie and Chet Baker. He played tango with Astor Piazzolla. And he’s one of the greats of film and television music ... the theme to Mission: Impossible is perhaps his best known work.

He’s got an impressive list of classical compositions too ... although as you can imagine they come with a good deal of influence from these other worlds.

His piano trio is a tribute to Maurice Ravel in which he gives us his own impressions of things that Ravel loved: African rhythms, Middle-Eastern scales and exotic textures.
