Symphony orchestras, opera orchestras, ballet orchestras – flutist Anthony Ferner has played in or conducted them all!

He’s also a recitalist and chamber music player, and his recordings are heard regularly on RNZ Concert, including collaborations with harpist Helen Webby and pianist Gerard Willems.

The Christchurch flutist and conductor spent more than two decades overseas, including 17 years in Australia playing in the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra. He returned to New Zealand in 1996 to take up the position of Principal Flute with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra.

Anthony recently retired from that position, although he stays on as Principal Emeritus Flute. RNZ Concert’s Cynthia Morahan caught up with him to talk about being part of the CSO's journey to where it is today, and some of the highlights of his music career.
