Vincent Hardaker has a unique position in New Zealand’s musical life.

The young conductor is New Zealand’s first Assistant Conductor in Residence for the country’s five professional orchestras. This new initiative to support up-and-coming conductors began in November last year before the coronavirus pandemic.

With many international conductors no longer being able to travel to New Zealand because of the Covid-19 border restrictions, Vincent’s appointment has grown in size and importance. And he's just been confirmed in the position for another year.

Vincent Hardaker talks about what the role entails, and also discusses the intricacies of preparing to conduct the live soundtrack to a special Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra screening of the classic 1985 film Back to the Future.
