Each year, Orchestra Wellington has a different overall theme for the season, and in 2022 it’s Circle of Friends.

The title works on many different levels – the concerts showcase works by Romantic era composer friends Clara and Robert Schumann, Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn, and Johannes Brahms.

But the most important level for Musical Director Marc Taddei is the idea that the audience is actually part of Orchestra Wellington’s circle, part of their friends.

“I keep on talking about this idea that we have three parts to musical performance,” says Marc.

“You have to have the creator; you have to have the performers; and then you have to have – most importantly of all – the interpreters. And [the interpreters are] the audience, the people who listen, judge and interpret what they hear.”

“All three of these groups are very important and there is a connection: there is a circle of trust, a circle of friendship, a circle of musical understanding that has to be there. And that, ultimately, is the secret to Orchestra Wellington’s success: we really recognise the role of the audience."

“I think anyone who comes to a concert can understand that they are really an integral part of how a work is conveyed live.”
