Mudfish were once the most common freshwater fishes in New Zealand, and have some amazing abilities - during hot summers early settlers were often startled to dig them up in their vegetable gardens. But a loss of more than 90% of their wetland habitat has meant that these days mudfish are rather rare.

Waikato University's Nick Ling offers to try and show Alison Ballance one of these reclusive fish, and takes her first to Lake Kaituna, a restored peat lake, where black mudfish have been successfully relocated.
