1:25 A new book on helping people process the emotional roller coaster of life

Part of being human means experiencing lifes ups and downs -  and the emotional pain that comes along with that, as much as we try to avoid it, is unavoidable.

According to our next guest however, emotional pain is not only a natural response to life events that hurt us, but painful emotions also serve an evoluntionary purpose: they encourage us to act in ways that improve our chances of survival and help us grow and develop as human beings.

1:35 Free dental care rolls into Porirua

The cost of a visit to the dentist was a big point of contention during the election campaign this year.

But over the next couple of weekends a community-led initiative in Porirua is taking the reigns from politicians and having a crack at offering free dental care themselves.

It's been spearheaded in the community network Te Wāhi Tiaki Tātou and project leads Anita Taggart and Jodi Watene.

3:35 Critter of the Week

The week's critter is a native species of spittlebug.

Spittlebugs get their common name from the spit-like substance the young bugs create on plants.

They create this unique dwelling by peeing out a sticky substance made from undigested sugars and turning their abdomen into a bellows to create bubbles.
