The scree wētā (Dienacrida connectens) is Aotearoa's largest nocturnal alpine insect. Like its name suggests, it likes to make its home in loose rock on the sides of mountains throughout Te Wai Pounamu.
They're the most widespread of our giant wētā species and the only giant wētā not currently protected by the Wildlife Act of 1953.
