Paolo Bacigalupi has written one of the great books of modern science fiction - The Windup Girl. It has won the most prestigious awards possible, both the Hugo and Nebula prizes. He has also been acclaimed by Time magazine as the successor to William Gibson, whose novel Neuromancer predicted cyberspace and the whole online way of life.
