Between Hitler and a Hard Place
Rolf Panny managed to avoid joining the Hitler Youth, and tried all kinds of clever tactics to avoid getting drafted into the German army. But eventually, he ended up in a boot camp for officers and was sent to the Russian Front because of his habit of always asking why. When the war finished he lived in France, then became a university professor teaching German in the US and later, Massey University in Wellington. When he retired he decided to write a book about his childhood and wartime experiences.
