The man who defrauded a charitable trust linked to the Māori king to pay for weight loss surgery has avoided jail and been sentenced to home detention. Rangi Whakaruru was the king's trusted private secretary, but over a year he defrauded a trust of over $100,000 by writing false invoices. The 57-year-old was today sentenced, and due to his previous good character and commitment to paying reparation - avoided jail time.
