'Hundreds' left behind in Kabul evacuaiton - Defence Minister

From Checkpoint, 5:03 pm on 27 August 2021

"We are not giving up on bringing those who need to come home, home" Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said on Friday, as NZ was forced to abandoned its mercy mission in Afghanistan.

Speaking to Checkpoint, Defence Minister Peeni Henare said he could not give an update on numbers of people evacuated from Afghanistan by NZDF, as processing is underway.

But "we sadly couldn't get everybody," he said.

He repeated the Prime Minister's commitment to look at getting those unable to get out.

"We are talking hundreds," of people left behind in Kabul, Henare said, after Islamic state suicide bombers attacked the Airport killing at least 60 people on Friday morning (NZ time).

The NZDF with the help of allies have managed to rescue 276 people, and another plane is carrying an unknown number of people destined for Aotearoa.

But two other planned evacuation flights have been abandoned as it is too unsafe.
