Tourism Minister defends self-isolation rules as border reopens

From Checkpoint, 5:25 pm on 4 February 2022

The New Zealand border is gradually reopening, but the barrier to tourists is not changing any time soon.

Tourism operators say keeping a self isolation requirement leaves them starved of business.

Tourism Minister Stuart Nash is defending the government's decision on self-isolation as the border gradually reopens.

"We will continue as a government to do whatever we need to do to keep our citizens and our community safe," he told Checkpoint.

"Nothing has changed in that respect. And when July rolls around, if we deem that we need to continue to self isolate tourists... self isolation will still be in place. but one thing I will say and I promise the industry that this is something we will continuously monitor.

"When we're safe to open our borders without self isolation for Kiwis and for international tourists believe me, we will, but I can't give you a date of whenever it's going to be at this point of time."
