Responsible Campers Association fight freedom camping 'crap' law

From Checkpoint, 5:46 pm on 31 May 2023

A law aimed at stopping freedom campers leaving number twos around the country side is crap according to opponents who say they will continue fight it.

The Self Contained Motor Vehicle Legislation...that makes it compulsory for campervans to have a certifed fixed toilet on board has passed its third reading.

But there's a two year transition period for people to comply. The Responsible Campers Association says it'll be looking for a legal out to the new rules.

Founder Bob Osborne told Lisa Owen what he thinks.

Clarification: In the interview Bon Osborne says truck drivers who pull over to rest will be subject to infringement under the Freedom Camping Act.

MBIE has responded to say this is incorrect.

“People who are resting to avoid driver fatigue are not considered freedom campers under the legislation. This means the new rules related to freedom camping don’t apply to people in this situation,” an MBIE spokesperson said.

“The legislation enables people to sleep or rest (so it depends from person to person) to avoid driver fatigue.”

However, MBIE has not detailed what duration defines a rest, according to the law.
