9 year old Aussie boy writes book to plus-size pocket money

Once upon a time, there was an enterprising West Australian boy who decided to write a book to plus-size his pocket money.

Bodie Howland tells us about his debut book The Love Hearts Explore Exmouth.

Bodie tells Lisa Owen he's "not a very good speller" but loves writing and the story didn't take too long to write.

"I did it on my mom's laptop. And I drew the pictures in and inserted them into the laptop and printed it off."

Getting the money together to print multiple copies was the hardest part of the process, he says.

"But luckily, my birthday just passed and I had enough money and my mom and dad also helped me match the money."

Bodie decided to set his story of two adventurous love hearts "filled to the brim with happiness, love, friendship and memories" in Exmouth to show how amazing the town is.

"It's right next to the beach and the Ningaloo Reef has whale sharks, turtles ... it's a really good, remote place and we have a lot of tourism."

So far, he's sold around 150 copies of the book and spent some of his earnings on an electric scooter.

"I was trying to make a lot of money off it so I could save up to make more books to get my first car and that basic stuff you have to get when you're older."

Bodie says it's likely The Love Hearts Explore Exmouth won't be his last published work.

"I'm always thinking maybe if we ever do go travelling around Australia again. We might make more books about those places, and then I might have a collection or something."

Anyone able to read and write can produce their own book, he says.

"You just need like a piece of paper and a pen and you can just start writing along making your ideas and like you can fold them together ... you can write any type of book you want and sell it anywhere, like I used to sell my book at the market."
