Joy Crooks is a proud South Londoner of Bangladeshi and Irish heritage

Her music defies genres, her timeless vocals are reminiscent of a bygone era and communicate her stories and reflections with a presence and lyricism that could only exist today.

Her first studio album, Skin, nominated for the Mercury Prize too -  is a statement of

selfhood, the DNA of what makes her Joy Crookes as well as an examination

of the relationships that have shaped her.

She performed for the first time in NZ this week and Charlotte Ryan had the opportunity to talk with her.
