The Stratified Care Model for Management of Low Back Pain - or STarT Back, was developed at Keele University in the UK.

It's a new model for getting on top of lower back pain which addresses patients individually and challenges a reluctance to be physically active with back injuries.

In New Zealand back pain is one of the biggest health issues for people aged between 15 and 64.

Kathryn Ryan speaks with Consultant Physiotherapist Gail Sowden from the Research Institute for Primary Care & Health Sciences at Keele University, who was here recently running workshops in Dunedin.

Also joining the conversation Professor David Baxter from the University of Otago's Centre School of Physiotherapy.
