Queenstown locals are reeling over the possibility of a prolonged boil water notice.

The notice was put in place after people started getting sick with cryptosporidium infections, and the national water authority, Taumata Arowai served the council with a compliance notice.

This is because the Two Mile water treatment plant does not have a protozoa barrier, which prevents parasites entering the supply. Queenstown's mayor Glyn Lewers has said it could be months before the equipment is in place.

There are currently 17 known cases of cryptosporidium in the resort town.

Queenstown business owner Fleur Caulton, who has two restaurants in the resort town, talks with Kathryn.
