Don't rule out the underdog, says Labour leader

Labour leader Phil Goff is insisting his party can win the election despite being well behind in the polls.

In the latest 3 News-Reid Research poll, National is on 52.3% support with Labour trailing on 30.2%.

"In sport as in politics never rule the underdog out," Mr Goff told Radio New Zealand's Morning Report programme.

"Labour has got serious policy we're putting before the people.

"We're saying, look we're going to be honest with New Zealand; there are some real difficulties in the economy, debt is out of control. Labour's got a serious plan to deal with that debt."

Mr Goff said Labour's policy of introducing a capital gains tax is a better way to improve the Government's books than National's policy of partial asset sales.

He disputed National's estimate that Labour's policies would add $16 billion to net public debt by 2016.

"We will pay down our debt as quickly as National will, but the difference is that we'll still have the assets producing the hundreds of millions of dollars in dividends at the end of that because we will be using a fair capital gains tax to meet the cost of repaying that debt."

National Party leader John Key is being interviewed on Morning Report on Tuesday 8 November.
