John Amis Composer Portraits

We pay tribute to the British broadcasting personality who died last year, aged 91, with this series made in 1981 and recently re-mastered. Known to many through the My Music panel game, John Amis visited this country several times and recorded programmes for Radio New Zealand on two occasions. His experience working with and interviewing hundreds of musicians and composers made him a witty contributor, admired for his phenomenal musical knowledge and his ability to drop into the programme an appropriate and often hilarious personal anecdote whenever called upon. While the spoken content is contemporary to the 1980s, Amis's personal associations with each of the composers make his comments still very relevant thirty years later

Five programmes

Philosophy Talk

Presented by Ken Taylor and John Perry of Stanford University

Six programmes

(5) Freedom & Free Enterprise

"Freedom" means the human capacity to choose among options, based on one's own preferences and reasoning. It also stands for the political status to exercise such freedom on matters of conscience and to express opinions without interference from the state. Enlightenment thinkers also included the right to buy and sell property in an open market with minimal government interference. So is the justification for our free-enterprise system a practical matter - an effective way of organising resources and the distribution of goods - or does it rest on deeper principles? John and Ken test their entrepreneurial spirit with Shannon Stimson from UC Berkeley, co-author of After Adam Smith: A Century of Transformation in Politics and Political Economy (Ben Manilla Productions)

Bob Dylan, No Direction Home

A two-part music radio special that traces the life of Bob Dylan and his impact on 20th-century American popular music and culture, with exclusive music, interviews and other content from his personal archives

The project began to take shape in 1995 when Dylan's manager, Jeff Rosen, began scheduling interviews with Dylan's friends and associates. Among those interviewed are poet Allen Ginsberg and folk musician Dave Van Ronk, both of whom died not long after this programme was completed. Dylan's old girlfriend Suze Rotolo also granted a rare interview (1) (Joyride Media)

MEEHAN: These Rough Notes, An Evocation of Antarctica

Had we lived I should have had a tale to tell of the hardihood, endurance and courage of my companions which would have stirred the heart of every Englishman. These rough notes and our dead bodies must tell the tale (Robert Falcon Scott)

Drawing its title from one of the last pages of Scott's journal, this collaboration between the poet Bill Manhire, composer Norman Meehan and singer Hannah Griffin remembers the tragedies of Scott's polar expedition in 1912 and the crash of NZ901 into Mt Erebus in 1979. The collaboration also included images of Antarctica by Anne Noble, drawn from the series of Antarctic work she has been making since 2001 (recorded in Soundings Theatre, Te Papa, Wellington by RNZ)
